Report: Antoine Griezmann to Be Offered Pay Rise Amid Barcelona, Man United Talk

Christopher SimpsonApr 11, 2018

Atletico Madrid are reportedly set to offer Antoine Griezmann a weekly salary of £335,000 per week in a bid to keep him at the club this summer amid rumours linking him with Manchester United and Barcelona.

According to Mundo Deportivo's Miguel Rico (h/t MailOnline's Alex Martin), he'll be offered €20 million per year (£17.5 million) to stay put, and the deal will also eliminate his €100 million (£87 million) buyout clause, with a less accessible one in its place.

The Mirror's John Cross reported Atletico are desperate to keep the Frenchman and are believed to have promised manager Diego Simeone they will do their utmost for that to happen amid the coach committing his own future to the club.

Simeone has discussed his desire to keep Griezmann, per Goal:

United are monitoring his situation as they've had their eye on Griezmann for some time, while Barcelona have made him one of their top targets for the summer, per Cross.

The 27-year-old has had ups and downs over the course of this campaign, but it's not difficult to see why Los Rojiblancos are eager for him to remain at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium given he has racked up 25 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

In his last outing for Atleti he scored against bitter rivals Real Madrid in their 1-1 draw, and he boasts an impressive record at the Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga, per OptaJose:

As well as being a clinical goalscorer, he links up well with his team-mates and will look to create plenty of opportunities for them, and he's a tireless worker to boot.

However, those qualities that endear him so much to Atletico are the same that have attracted interest from United and Barca.

Football writer Jordan Clarke anticipates he'll end up at Old Trafford:

Griezmann would likely already be there had Atletico not been hit with a transfer ban last summer, which prevented them from registering a replacement for the forward.

United and Barca will most likely need to meet his buyout clause if they are to sign him this summer, though, and if that is the case it will come down to Griezmann to choose his destination—Atleti won't be able to stop him joining their domestic rivals if they're his club of choice.

Staying put isn't out of the question either, though, particularly if such a sizeable salary is on offer.
