Khalil Mack Rumors: LB Looking for New Contract with over $65M in Guarantees

Tyler ConwayApr 10, 2018

Oakland Raiders linebacker Khalil Mack is reportedly seeking $65 million in guarantees in contract extension negotiations.

Steve Wyche of NFL Network reported the news.

Mack, 27, did not show up for the team's voluntary workouts on Monday. He is not expected to be part of the team's voluntary workout program unless he receives a new contract.

A $65 million guarantee at signing would make Mack the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. Ndamukong Suh currently holds the record at $59.9 million in guarantees, per Spotrac.

Mack has certainly fit the bill during his first four NFL seasons, emerging as one of the most consistently dominant pass-rushers in the sport. He's put up at least 10 sacks in each of the last three seasons, all of which have led to Pro Bowl berths. The 2017 season was the first time since his rookie year he was not a first-team All-Pro.

"I watched pretty much every game from last year and actually I watched a couple from 2016. Having a talent like that and ability of a guy like that, certainly you wanna make it the centerpiece of the defense," defensive coordinator Paul Guenther told reporters in January. "We gotta continue to develop our younger players to bring those guys up to speed and add people as we go through the draft and free agency, but he's a guy that you can really build the foundation through and around. He's an exciting guy to be able to coach for sure."

Mack is playing under his fifth-year option salary in 2018 and could be an unrestricted free agent next offseason. The Raiders would almost certainly use the franchise tag on him if they are unable to come to terms on a long-term contract extension.
