Arsenal Transfer News: Reiss Nelson Wants Gunners Stay Amid Real Madrid Rumours

Matt JonesApr 10, 2018

Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson has made it clear he wants to sign a new contract with the Gunners amid rumours he's being tracked by Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

The 18-year-old has impressed plenty with a string of excellent displays in the Arsenal youth setup and has pushed for a first-team berth this season. On Sunday, he made his first Premier League start in the 3-2 win over Southampton.

Speaking after that appearance, Nelson made it clear he only sees his future at the Emirates Stadium, with his current deal poised to run out at the end of next season, per James Benge of the Evening Standard:

"It is a big achievement to sign for a big club like Arsenal so I'm just delighted with the contract and hopeful that I can sign it soon.

"[Arsene] Wenger is one of the biggest [influences] for me, he keeps pushing the youngsters—me, Eddie [Nketiah] and Joe [Willock]—I think he has got a bright future planned for us."

As noted by Benge, the teenager has caught the eye of some of Europe's biggest clubs, including the Spanish and French champions.

According to Benge, they weren't the only sides chasing one of the most exciting prospects to come out of the Arsenal academy in recent seasons:

Arsenal's involvement in the UEFA Europa League and run to the final of the League Cup has allowed Wenger to give Nelson chances this season, so much so that he has made 15 appearances in all competitions.

Although he's been used as a right wing-back in a lot of those matches, Nelson has the quality to make an impact further forward, and against Southampton, he was pushed up on the right wing.

In that game, while he showcased some glimpses of talent, there were also signs of inexperience, as James McNicholas of Gunnerblog noted:

Still, there's an exciting future to come for Nelson at the Emirates, and given Arsenal's hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League are effectively over, the youngster should get more opportunities to show what he can do in the top flight this season.

On either flank, Nelson can be a big problem for defenders, as he is quick, skilful and strong on both sides. Of course, there's still plenty of developing for him to do, but there doesn't appear to be any danger of the youngster going elsewhere at this juncture.
