Steve Spurrier Says He Wants Tim Tebow on His Minor League Football Team

Rob GoldbergApr 9, 2018

Steve Spurrier will be the head coach of the Orlando franchise in the upcoming Alliance of American Football, which will debut in Feb. 2019, and he wants Tim Tebow to be his quarterback.

"That would be wonderful," Spurrier said of Tebow joining his team in Orlando on the Open Mike radio show, per Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel. "I think Tim knows about our league. He knows he’s welcome to come down (to Orlando) and play."

Tebow is currently playing minor league baseball in the New York Mets organization and hasn't played professional football since 2012.

His last chance in the NFL was with the Eagles before being cut in 2015, and he has concentrated on baseball since signing with the Mets in 2016.

The 30-year-old is currently playing for the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies and has one home run in two games this season. Although he hit just .226 across the minors last season, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson expects him to reach the majors, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

"Obviously, if his baseball career is going well, he may decide to stick with it, which I would certainly understand," Spurrier said. "But if it doesn’t go too well and he has the urge to play football, we would certainly welcome him in Orlando."

Tebow is, of course, best known for his time at Florida, where he won the 2007 Heisman Trophy and was a part of two national championship teams.

Spurrier was both a player and coach for the Gators but was coaching at South Carolina while Tebow was making his impact in college football. Florida never lost to the Gamecocks during those four years.

In addition to knowing his ability on the field, the 72-year-old likely predicts Tebow could be the type of star to bring the Alliance of American Football into the mainstream.
