Pep Guardiola Jokes Sergio Aguero Dived After Ashley Young's Tackle

Christopher SimpsonApr 9, 2018

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola provided a sarcastic response when asked about Sergio Aguero's fitness, after the Argentinian was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Ashley Young in Saturday's Manchester derby.

Aguero was brought down in the area by Young in Manchester United's 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium, with referee Martin Atkinson waving for play to continue despite the dangerous tackle. Guardiola is evidently still unhappy with the decision, per Goal's Sam Lee:

City were 2-0 up in the clash thanks to goals from Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan, but a brace from Paul Pogba and a winner from Chris Smalling prevented the Sky Blues from lifting the Premier League title.

Guardiola has repeatedly called for more protection to be given to players by referees from bad tackles this season, though his pleas appear to have fallen on deaf ears.

Stuart Brennan of the Manchester Evening News and sports journalist Mootaz Chehade took issue with Young's tackle:

City will need Aguero fit and firing on Tuesday if they're to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Liverpool in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

The Argentinian striker is searching for his 200th goal for the Citizens having scored 30 this season.

Poor finishing from City cost them multiple chances to close out the clash with United, and they cannot afford to be so profligate against the Reds, particularly as they'll need at least five goals if Liverpool manage to score once.

Aguero is the most ruthless weapon in their arsenal, so he'll likely be key to any comeback they might pull off.
