US Open 2018 Betting Odds: Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy Top List, Tiger Woods 4th
Patrick Reed won the 2018 Masters on Sunday, prevailing against Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler, among others, but he is nowhere close to being the oddsmakers' favorite for the 2018 U.S. Open.
OddsShark shared the odds on Sunday, and Dustin Johnson, Spieth and Rory McIlroy pace the field with Tiger Woods coming in fourth:
The U.S. Open takes place from June 14-17 at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Long Island, New York.
McIlroy finds himself with favorable odds despite a missed opportunity Sunday. He was just three strokes behind Reed entering the final round of the Masters and was in ideal position to make a charge at the career grand slam when he made up two strokes in the first two holes.
However, his putter consistently let him down and prevented the 2011 U.S. Open champion from joining Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen as the only golfers to win all four majors.
Bettors can take solace knowing McIlroy has prevailed at the U.S. Open before, although those who want to back Spieth can point to how effectively he charged past McIlroy and almost made up a nine-stroke deficit to Reed on Sunday with an eight-under 64.
The showing was a testament to Spieth's ability to make a charge at any time, and he figures to be dangerous once again at the U.S. Open.
As for Johnson, he won his first major championship at the 2016 U.S. Open and will look to replicate the performance this year.
Still, it will likely be Woods who draws the most attention as he continues his comeback from four back surgeries and an extended absence from the game. He is four major championships behind Nicklaus' 18 for the all-time record and demonstrated flashes of his prime Sunday with five birdies and an eagle despite finishing one over for the Masters.
He is also a betting favorite of the public and was the odds favorite at one point heading into the Masters.
Woods has challenged for tournaments this year with a tie for second at the Valspar Championship and tie for fifth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but a major victory would be a significant step in his comeback efforts.
