Mike Gundy Starts Donation Collection for Stillwater Public School Teachers
Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy announced Saturday he'll collect donations for teachers in the Stillwater (Oklahoma) Public Schools system.
Gundy tweeted he's setting up the donations for Monday:
The Oklahoma Teachers Association started a walkout that will continue into next week as teachers seek more state funding for education.
According to the Oklahoman's Scott Wright, Gundy has two sons in the Stillwater Public Schools system.
Gundy said he "[doesn't] pretend to know all the ins and outs of the details involved" in the ongoing walkout but that he has "always felt that the educators in this state are way overworked and way underpaid."
The O'Colly's Jeremy Kolok shared Gundy's full thoughts on the situation:
In January, Education Week ranked Oklahoma 46th in the country in overall quality of education and gave the state a grade of D for school finance.
According to CNN's Madison Park, public school teachers in Oklahoma earn an average of $41,150 in elementary schools, $42,380 in middle schools and $42,460 in high schools. The national averages for those three levels are $59,020, $59,800 and $61,420, respectively.
