Grading Tiger Woods' Round 3 Performance at the 2018 Masters

Gianni VerschuerenApr 7, 2018

Tiger Woods played an uneventful even round of 72 during Saturday's 2018 Masters action, keeping his overall score at four over after Round 3 at Augusta National.

The four-time Masters champion struggled with par fives yet again, garnering a single birdie on those, which came on the eighth hole. He did most of his damage on par threes, where his work from the tee was excellent.

Despite shooting his best round of the tournament, Woods has seen this sort of overall struggle only a few times before, per ESPN Stats & Info:

At four over, Woods sits miles behind the green jacket contenders. The best he can hope for is a solid finish Sunday.

Poor Start on Saturday

Woods had a poor outing Friday, shooting three over, and couldn't turn things around early in Round 3, as he carded back-to-back bogeys to start.

On both holes, he landed in the bunker and missed tricky putts for par. Fans who had tuned in early weighed in on his poor opening:

Woods righted the ship after his bad start, however, making par on three straight holes.

Heating Up Toward the End of Front Nine

Woods had a bit of bad luck with a poor break on the third hole, but his play improved toward the middle and end of the front nine.

He carded his first birdie on the par-three sixth hole, courtesy of a spectacular shot from the tee:

Woods saved par on the next hole with a great putt from a long way out before making another excellent birdie, set up with a good chip. At the end of the front nine, the 42-year-old was even on the day.

Solid Back Nine, but No Move Up the Leaderboard

After narrowly missing a birdie on the 10th, Woods had a largely uneventful back nine, as he made par on five straight occasions. A bogey on the 15th was followed by a birdie on the 16th, set up by yet another wonderful shot from the tee.

He overshot the green on the final hole―a common theme Saturday―but salvaged par to close the round.

Overall, fans were reasonably happy with the final result:

Grade: C
