Masters Schedule 2018: Friday Tee Times, TV Coverage, Live Stream, Predictions

Defending champion Sergio Garcia made a dreadful start to the 2018 Masters in Augusta, Georgia, hitting five shots in the water to card nine over par, while Jordan Spieth strode into a six-under lead at the end of the first round.

Garcia scored a 13 on the 15th hole, the joint-worst for a single hole in the entire history of the tournament, effectively ending his chances of winning back-to-back green jackets. The Spaniard will most likely struggle to make the cut after his second round.

Elsewhere, Rory McIlroy made a strong start with a three-under 69, putting him within touching distance of Spieth, while Tony Finau and Matt Kuchar both carded four under to complete the top three.

Spieth's confident start was defined by excellent putting throughout, as he recorded five consecutive birdies on the back nine. The 24-year-old's early lead is hardly a surprise. He won the 2015 Masters with a record-equaling 18 under par and has rediscovered some form of late, finishing third in the Houston Open on April 1.

With perfect weather and little wind expected on Friday, there is no reason why Spieth won't maintain confidence and stay ahead of the chasing pack by the end of play. However, it is worth noting that back in 2015, the American's best score was on Day 1, with his form tailing off slightly as the tournament progressed.

Speith prediction: 69

Garcia is only playing for pride now, but after such a low thanks to Thursday's disaster, things could get worse before they get better. Already two over when teeing off on the 15th, the Spaniard hit five near-identical shots into the water surrounding the green.

"I don't know what to tell you," Garcia said, per Jamie Lillywhite for BBC Sport. "It's the first time in my career where I make a 13 without missing a shot. Simple as that."

It won't be easy getting up this morning, and with that in mind, it is unlikely Garcia, currently second from bottom, will enjoy a particularly strong day. A steady, but unspectacular, score is the best Spanish fans can hope for.

Garcia prediction: 74
