Manchester United Transfer News: Monaco's Djibril Sidibe Reportedly Wanted

Gill ClarkApr 5, 2018

Manchester United are reportedly considering a summer move for Monaco full-back Djibril Sidibe who is said to be interested in joining the Red Devils.

Manager Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his defence and has already spoken to Sidibe about a possible move to Old Trafford, according to Le 10 Sport (h/t The Sun's Jake Lambourne).

Sidibe is able to play on both flanks, which would suit United who are short of options at full-back. Antonio Valencia is first choice on the right side, but there is little back-up to the 32-year-old.

Matteo Darmian is an option, but he is expected to leave the club. The Italian has agreed a deal to join Juventus in the summer, per Calciomercato.com (h/t Lee Astley at The Sun).

Left-back Luke Shaw's future is also uncertain, and he could depart in the summer after being criticised by Mourinho, per Simon Stone at BBC Sport.

Sidibe would be a versatile option for United; he has been an important part of the Monaco team this season and has six assists and two goals in Ligue 1.

The 25-year-old is quick, strong, loves to get up and down the flank and can put in a fine cross, but his defending can be questionable. Get French Football News highlighted his flaws:

Sidibe only joined Monaco from Lille in July 2016 but made an instant impact at the club in his first season as he helped Leonardo Jardim's side to the French title.

Squakwa Football showed how he fared during the campaign:

The full-back was linked with a move to the Premier League last season, but he said he would not want to move and find himself on the bench, per RMC (h/t TalkSport):

"This risk, in terms of going to a big club, is to become a substitute, to go backwards, to be loaned out. It is always difficult. My criteria is playing time. Aside from that, if a club that one simply does not refuse wants me and is guaranteeing me considerable playing time, then I will think about it."

If Shaw and Darmian do move on this summer, United will be in need of reinforcements and may be able to offer Sidibe regular football. However, it remains to be seen if he has the defensive discipline required by Mourinho.
