Kawhi Leonard Not at Odds with Other Spurs Players, Danny Green Says

Kyle NewportApr 4, 2018

While rumors of tension between Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs continue to swirl, Danny Green is trying to put out the fires.

Green recently went on Chris Broussard's In The Zone podcast (via Uproxx's Ryan Nagelhout) and denied it's Leonard versus the Spurs:

"I can say from our team and from their perspective and standpoint, I can speak for most of them, there is no odds. We're not at odds with him. I don't know about the front office, I don't know about family issues or whatever that is. I would like to guess none because he's in the facility, he's at the arena, he's still there, they communicate, they still talk and check up on him, he still works out with our training staff. But from the team's perspective, there's nobody on our team that's at odds with him. We understand, we have his back regardless of what he's been going through."

The North Carolina product took to Twitter last month to deny a report by ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski that the team held a players-only meeting to implore Leonard—who has played in only nine games this season—to return to the court for a playoff push:

The latest drama is a result of a report by ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst (via RealGM), who said on Monday's Outside the Lines that rival teams are preparing to call the Spurs to inquire about Leonard's availability. Windhorst's colleague Zach Lowe confirmed the report, saying, "Vultures are circling, in hopes of action around the draft."

Leonard missed the first 27 games of the season while he recovered from a right quadriceps injury before returning on a limited basis. However, he played in just nine games and has been out of action since Jan. 13.

Leonard, 26, can become a free agent in July 2019 if he declines his player option for the 2019-20 season, according to Spotrac. It's unclear whether Leonard's contract situation has played a role in his decision to be cautious with his injury.

Through all of it, Green has done his best to dispel the negativity.

San Antonio, meanwhile, has managed to stay in the thick of the playoff race without the former NBA Finals MVP. Heading into Wednesday's action, the Spurs were tied with the Utah Jazz for the fourth-best record in the Western Conference at 45-33.
