GGG Targeting September Rematch vs. Canelo Alvarez After Fight Cancellation

Mike ChiariApr 4, 2018

Gennady Golovkin is hoping to reschedule his rematch with Canelo Alvarez for Sept. 15 after their scheduled May 5 bout was canceled Tuesday.

According to TMZ Sports, GGG's promoter, Tom Loeffler, said Golovkin is still "100 percent" committed to fighting Alvarez and added that it remains his "main focus." Loeffler also said that Golovkin plans to face a replacement opponent May 5.

Alvarez pulled out of the fight due to a looming extension of a temporary suspension for testing positive for banned performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol in February. Clenbuterol is often used to cut fat while maintaining muscle mass.

Alvarez said the positive test was the result of eating contaminated Mexican beef.

May 5 would have marked the second meeting between Alvarez and Golovkin, as they previously fought to a draw in September. It was the first time in GGG's professional career (37-0-1) that he didn't end a bout with a win.

Alvarez now sits at 49-1-2, with his only loss coming versus the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013.

Golovkin's plan of fighting May 5 and Sept. 15 would only give him four months of recovery before clashing with Alvarez. He isn't a stranger to that type of schedule, though, as Golovkin beat Willie Monroe Jr. in May 2015, less than three months after picking up a win over Martin Murray.
