Arsenal and Juventus Reportedly Eye Dani Ceballos in Latest Rumours

Matt JonesApr 3, 2018

Arsenal and Juventus are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid's out-of-favour midfielder Dani Ceballos in the summer.

According to El Confidencial (h/t Sport Witness), the 21-year-old wants to move clubs at the end of the season, having made just two La Liga starts for the European champions.

Per the article, Ceballos doesn't believe he will get the playing time needed to develop under manager Zinedine Zidane in Madrid and would consider a move as a result, even if it was an initial loan deal. The Spaniard would favour a switch back to Real Betis if possible.

The youngster moved to the Santiago Bernabeu ahead of the campaign in what was considered a coup for the La Liga side, with the playmaker having previously starred for Betis and the Spain under-21 team.

However, with so many options for Zidane to call upon in the centre of midfield, chances have been at a minimum for the youngster, and the excitement that surrounded him throughout the summer has faded significantly.

As noted by David Cartlidge, when he has been on the pitch lately for the Spain under-21 side, the midfielder has served up a reminder of what he's capable of:

Ceballos cemented his status as one of La Liga's rising stars in 2016-17, when he forced his way into the Betis side on a consistent basis and eventually became one of the team's key players.

He showcased his ability at the 2017 UEFA Under-21 European Championship.

While Spain lost in the final to Germany, Ceballos earned the Player of the Tournament award and was expected to kick on again in the capital. However, he's yet to show anywhere near his best in the iconic all-white strip.

It doesn't appear as though Ceballos is willing to give up on his Madrid dream yet, though, per Goal UK:

If Ceballos were to leave on loan for a spell, he would be an interesting option for either Arsenal or Juventus.

The Gunners may be looking to strengthen their midfield options this summer, especially if Jack Wilshere walks away at the end of the campaign. The England international is out of contract and there appears to be little progress in respect of an extension.

Ceballos is someone who can commit opponents in the middle of the park, as these numbers from WhoScored.com show:

Ceballos could be effective in English football, as he's not one to shirk a tackle nor a physical battle. With that in mind, his technical ability would see him stand out.

There will be a lot of clubs on alert if Ceballos is available at the end of the season, though. And given regular football must be his priority if he is to make a switch, there may also be more suitable fits for him at this point than Arsenal or Juve.
