PSG Transfer News: Parisiens Prioritise Jan Oblak Amid Premier League Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenMar 30, 2018

Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea could face some competition for Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, as Paris Saint-Germain are said to have made the stopper their top priority and are not afraid of his €100 million buyout clause.

According to RMC (via AS), the Ligue 1 giants are seriously considering paying the full clause, which would be roughly £88 million. PSG have struggled to find a quality option in goal for years, and while academy graduate Alphonse Areola has bags of talent, he has also made too many mistakes this season.

Per AS, Oblak recently told reporters there have been no new contract negotiations with Atletico. The 25-year-old is still under contract until 2021, but the buyout clause presents something of a problem for the Rojiblancos if a club is willing to trigger it.

While a fee of €100 million for a goalkeeper may have seemed outrageous just a few years ago, the market has shifted tremendously. Football transfer records have been smashed repeatedly in recent years, and PSG have been at the front of that revolution with the £200 million deal to sign Neymar in the 2017 summer transfer window.

That outlay, in addition to the £166 million fee they'll be required to pay for the permanent transfer of Kylian Mbappe at the end of the season, could present something of a problem for Les Parisiens, who have to stay within the confines of financial fair play. In all likelihood, they'll sell a host of players in the summer.

Oblak isn't mentioned among the world's best goalkeepers as often as he should, but fans who look a little deeper know he's one of the elite options at the position.

As shared by WhoScored.com, his stats are simply incredible:

The former Benfica man is the latest in a long line of brilliant Atletico stoppers, taking over at the position from Thibaut Courtois, who was on loan from Chelsea. The Belgian followed in the footsteps of Manchester United stud David De Gea in the Spanish capital.

Courtois' future in west London is a major question mark, and plenty of pundits believe he will leave the Blues in the summer. He recently told Belgian outlet Sporza (h/t Goal's Chris Burton) he wants to decide his future before the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

His departure would open up a spot at Chelsea, while Arsenal will also be in the market for a goalkeeper. Petr Cech has not been the same since moving across London to the Emirates Stadium, and at the age of 35, it's clear his best days are behind him.

Both those clubs and PSG could use the services of Oblak:

The finances could be tricky, as a total cost of €100 would still set the record for a goalkeeper by some distance. But Oblak is as reliable and talented as they come, making him extremely valuable.

PSG's tendency to spend big should put them in pole position to land Oblak, although they'll have some work to do to fit yet another major transfer fee within the financial fair play budget.
