The Miz, Asuka Win WWE Mixed Match Challenge vs. Bobby Roode, Charlotte Flair

Joseph ZuckerApr 3, 2018

The Miz and Asuka prevailed in the final of the inaugural WWE Mixed Match Challenge, defeating Bobby Roode and Charlotte Flair on Tuesday night.

The Miz hit a Skull-Crushing Finale on Roode to pick up the win. The former United States champion was setting up the Glorious DDT before Asuka kicked him in the back of the head. That provided The A-Lister an opportunity to hit his finishing move and make him and his partner Mixed Match Challenge champions.

With the victory, WWE will donate $100,000 to Rescue Dogs Rock, which was the charity of choice for The Miz and Asuka before the tournament got underway.

The win provides the pair with some nice momentum ahead of WrestleMania 34, which is Sunday in New Orleans. The Miz is defending the Intercontinental Championship against Seth Rollins and Finn Balor, while Asuka is challenging Flair for the SmackDown Live Women's Championship.

Flair at least has an opportunity for revenge. Successfully defending her title and ending Asuka's undefeated streak would make up for losing in the Mixed Match Challenge final.

In general, the Mixed Match Challenge should be viewed as a success for WWE.

Some fans were likely skeptical at first when Pro Wrestling Sheet's Ryan Satin first reported last November that WWE was negotiating with Facebook regarding a weekly show.

WWE has saturated the market with so many programs that it was hard to see the need for another new series. Not to mention, the company already had Main Event as a midweek program independent of the two main brands.

However, the Mixed Match Challenge brought something different to the table and felt more like a house show than the typical episode of Raw or SmackDown. The wrestlers involved also had a little more freedom to interact with one another.

As a result, the stuff outside of the ring was often more entertaining than what happened inside the ropes.

Sami Zayn and Becky Lynch's promo after their loss to Braun Strowman and Alexa Bliss was their top highlight from the event.

Even The Lass Kicker couldn't help but crack up when her teammate blamed the birthday cake they ate before the match for their defeat:

The dynamic between Strowman and Bliss was a strong aspect of the Mixed Match Challenge as well. Nobody could have envisioned the budding romance that would grow in the heat of competition:

The Mixed Match Challenge itself may only be a one-off for WWE. The company hasn't held follow-ups to the Cruiserweight Classic or Mae Young Classic, which were much different events to the Mixed Match Challenge but similar in how WWE experimented with new concepts.

The Mixed Match Challenge may have been more of a test run for WWE and Facebook. Variety's Kristopher Tapley reported in January that the social media company and Amazon have shown interest in purchasing the rights to air Raw and SmackDown Live.
