Liverpool Transfer News: Reds Given Fresh Max Meyer Hope in Latest Rumours

Gill ClarkMar 29, 2018

Liverpool have been given fresh hope over a move for Max Meyer after Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel said he expects the midfielder to leave in the summer.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal are keen on the 22-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the season, and Heidel said the midfielder does not want to discuss a new deal, per Charles Watts at Football.London.

"At the moment we can and must expect that Max leaves the club in the summer. Everything suggests that," Heidel said. "At the moment there is no offer from us and no wish from Max to have a conversation again."

Arsenal see Meyer as the perfect replacement for Santi Cazorla, but Liverpool are also interested and the two clubs may battle for his signature, per Watts.

Meyer is a key player for Schalke, who are enjoying a fine season and are second in the Bundesliga table, albeit a distant 17 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

WhoScored.com highlighted one of Meyer's key strengths:

The 22-year-old was known as an attacking midfielder, but he has moved into a deeper role under manager Domenico Tedesco with great success.

Scouted Football explained how the transition has occurred:

Although Naby Keita is due to arrive at Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer, the club could lose Emre Can, who is out of contract at the end of the season and yet to agree a new deal.

Can is wanted by Juventus and general manager Giuseppe Marotta has said he is their "primary objective," per Mediaset Premium (h/t Danny Gallagher at MailOnline).

Meyer's future looks to be away from Schalke, but the free agent is bound to attract interest from many clubs and may have his pick come the summer.
