Chelsea Transfer News: Marcos Alonso Responds to Real Madrid Rumours

Gill ClarkMar 28, 2018

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has said he has "not considered the possibility" of a move to Real Madrid after speculation he could return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alonso began his career at Real Madrid but failed to make the breakthrough in the Spanish capital, but he is not thinking of a return, per Marca (h/t Aaron Flanagan at the Mirror).

"I have not considered that possibility [returning to Madrid], he said. "I just try to give the best of me and my team. I made my [Madrid] debut with [Manuel] Pellegrini in 2009/10, and that summer I had the opportunity to go to the Premier League. I don't know what would've happened if I stayed, I live in the present."

The 27-year-old has been a hit since joining Chelsea from Fiorentina in August 2016. He helped the Blues to the Premier League title last season and has become a key player for the team.

Alonso also provides an attacking outlet down the left flank and has six goals and an assist in this campaign, which is a good return from a wing-back.

Opta showed how impressive his record is:

The Chelsea player's form has seen him rewarded with a first call-up to the senior Spain squad. He made his debut in Tuesday's 6-1 win over Argentina and followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, per sports journalist Vaishali Bhardwaj:

Real Madrid are considering a £50 million move for Alonso as they seek cover for Marcelo, according to El Gol Digital (h/t Mikael McKenzie at the Daily Express).

Marcelo is considered to be one of the best left-backs in Europe, but he will turn 30 this year. The club brought in Theo Hernandez in summer 2017 as a back-up, but he has struggled to make much of an impression.

Sports journalist Robbie Dunne said the move to Real may have come too soon for the 20-year-old:

Real Madrid may be looking for an alternative option at left-back, and Alonso's form makes him an attractive target, particularly with the Blues likely to miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification for next season. However, it seems unlikely he'd be willing to leave his role at Chelsea for a place on Madrid's bench.
