Johnny Manziel Impresses NFL Scouts at Texas A&M Pro Day amid Comeback Attempt

Adam WellsMar 27, 2018

Just as he did in 2014, Johnny Manziel took part in Texas A&M's pro day Tuesday as part of his latest attempt at an NFL comeback.

This is the second time in a week that the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner worked out in front of NFL scouts. He threw at the University of San Diego on March 22 with representatives from 13 teams in attendance, per ESPN's Eric D. Williams

Per Taylor Bisciotti of the SEC Network, Aggies wide receiver Christian Kirk said he would be the one catching passes from Manziel during their workout.

Texas A&M is an environment Manziel knows well. He played two seasons with the program in 2012-13, leading the Aggies to 20 wins and two bowl victories in the process.

Asked about his playing future, Manziel seemed open to the possibility of playing in a league outside of the NFL.

“If something (NFL) pops up, it pops up," he said, via TSN's David William Naylor. "And if not, and I don’t the opportunity to go back, I’m going to play in the CFL.”

The Sporting News captured video of Manziel throwing to Kirk:

NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt noted scouts in attendance were pleased with what they saw from Manziel:

Manziel's workout four years ago led to the Cleveland Browns drafting him No. 22 overall. He struggled on and off the field after that moment. The Browns released him in March 2016 after he made just eight starts, going 2-6 with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.

After finishing his day, Manziel noted he felt good and then joked about his participation in pro days, via Bisciotti:

The CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats made Manziel a contract offer in January, though no deal has been agreed to at this point. They still have negotiating rights with him, giving him a potential landing spot if no NFL teams present a deal he is looking for.

At 25 years old, Manziel is still capable of carving out a long career in professional football. He appears to have put himself in a good position to get back on the field very soon after his latest pro day, with the only question being whether it will come in the NFL or CFL.
