NFL Free Agents 2018: Rumors, Predictions for Next Tier of Top Talent

Richard JanvrinMar 26, 2018

It's been nearly two weeks since the start of NFL free agency, and the overall talent pool is starting to reflect that.

Sure, there are still names like defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh available, but we're on the last legs of this period.

But with that, teams now look ahead to the draft.

They can reflect on how they did in free agency and address their remaining needs throughout the seven rounds coming in April.

News has been relatively slow, but there has been enough to give you updates on three players.

It's time to take a look and offer predictions on where these three will land.

Breaux to Visit Packers, 49ers

Former New Orleans Saints cornerback Delvin Breaux is still on the free-agent market.

A big part of this could have to do with the fractured fibula he suffered in 2017 that resulted in a lost season.

But there's still interest out there for his services.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Breaux has scheduled visits with the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

For the Packers, they recently brought in Tramon Williams, but they are fairly shallow in the secondary after trading Damarious Randall and losing safety Morgan Burnett, so Breaux would be a fit as a depth piece.

If Breaux went to the Packers, he'd also be in a competitive environment.

I'm not saying the 49ers aren't in that realm with their revamped team, but with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback in Green Bay, it's kind of a guarantee.

Prediction: Green Bay Packers

Gaines Gets Interest From Second Team

If you search the name "Phillip Gaines" on Twitter, you will not find the nicest things said about the former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback.

In 2017, Gaines was often burned by his opposition and did not turn in a good season overall.

That could have a lot to do with why he's still a free agent.

However, there are teams out there always looking for cornerback depth.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Gaines will meet with the Buffalo Bills.

As Garafolo noted, Gaines also met with the Indianapolis Colts.

Gaines doesn't seem to really fit what the Colts want to do in terms of getting younger, but then again, it's not like Gaines will be a vital asset to wherever he lands.

At this point, it's really a coin flip, but seeing as he left the Colts without a deal, maybe the Bills can lock him down to play behind Vontae Davis and Tre'Davious White.

How long Gaines sticks around, though, is a totally different question.

Prediction: Buffalo Bills

Looney to Re-Sign With Cowboys?

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Cowboys are close to bringing back veteran lineman Joe Looney.

As Moore noted, Looney didn't start a game for the Cowboys in 2017, but he has a valuable role with the team.

Not only can he play all three interior positions, he plays the jumbo package and provides veteran leadership.

There's really not a lot to look into here—Looney has been with the team since 2016 and is valued by the organisation.

The Cowboys also recently brought in fellow offensive linemen Cameron Fleming, but again, Looney's versatility along the interior of the line will help him in terms of potential playing time.

Expect Looney back in the Lonestar state.

Prediction: Dallas Cowboys
