Shareef O'Neal on NBA Age Limit: 'College Gets Kids Ready for the NBA'

Mike ChiariMar 18, 2018

College basketball's one-and-done system has long been criticized, but UCLA commit Shareef O'Neal expressed his belief Saturday that there's nothing wrong with it.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, O'Neal said he believes at least one year of college helps in preparing prospects for the NBA: "I think they should just leave it how it is ... college gets kids ready for the NBA."

O'Neal also showed understanding that some players want to enter the NBA as quickly as possible due to the life-changing money involved: "They might just do that to feed their families. I think that's why a lot of kids go one-and-done."

The 6'9", 205-pound O'Neal doesn't find himself in that predicament since he is the son of Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal.

Although the current draft system still requires a player to be 19 before signing with a team, alternative routes to the league are being explored, including further utilization of the G League.
