The man is still in the hospital following the accident.
"Everybody stepped up," McCaffrey said of the incident, per Max Henson of the Panthers' official website. "I called 9-1-1, and it felt like an eternity. It felt like we were up there waiting for four hours. But I looked back at my call log and it took 11 minutes before the paramedics came. Amazing what those guys did."
Dan Smoker Jr., the son of Dan Smoker Sr., who was the one to fall, credited McCaffrey's group with saving his father's life and tweeted his appreciation:
According to Henson, Smoker Sr.—who was hiking with his grandson when he fell—suffered a broken femur, a broken pelvis, internal bleeding, bleeding on the brain, nine fractured ribs and a broken neck.
McCaffrey went to visit him in the hospital with his mother and brothers.
