Tottenham Transfer News: Inter Milan Still Want Erik Lamela in Latest Rumours

Matt JonesMar 5, 2018

Inter Milan reportedly remain keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur winger Erik Lamela.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Tom Coast of Sport Witness), the Serie A side will try to convince Lamela to depart Spurs at the end of the season. The Argentina international has a contract with Tottenham until 2020.

Coast noted links between the Milan club and the 27-year-old date back to 2016, although a long injury layoff endured by Lamela brought an end to such speculation.

Lamela has regained full fitness this season and has been a part of Mauricio Pochettino's squad in recent months. Spurs are in the hunt for a top-four finish in the Premier League, as well as silverware in the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup.

Since moving to Tottenham in 2013, things haven't been straightforward for the former AS Roma man, as he initially struggled to settle in north London. However, under Pochettino, he made improvements to his game before a hip injury in 2016 ruled him out for more than a year.

According to Dan Kilpatrick of ESPN FC, Spurs are considering an option to extend Lamela's deal:

The winger faces major competition for his spot in the Tottenham XI, as Spurs are strong in the wide areas.

Typically this season, Heung-Min Son and Christian Eriksen have lined up in wider positions in support of Harry Kane. Additionally, Spurs spent big in January to add Lucas Moura to their ranks from Paris Saint-Germain.

When he's at this best, Lamela can bring something unique to the Tottenham attack. Being left-footed, he can dive in from the right flank or bomb down the touchline on the left. Pochettino has also instilled a tenacity into his game, with the South American always willing to put a shift in for the team.

That application can be crucial for Tottenham in big games. After they drew 2-2 in the Champions League against Juventus on February 13, sports writer Raj Bains was full of praise for the manner in which Lamela performed:

According to Coast, Inter are said to be considering a number of high-profile targets in the summer, including Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij and Juventus' Kwadwo Asamoah.

You sense a lot of Spurs supporters would be disappointed to lose Lamela. Although he's not lived up to the hype since his arrival from Italy, he has showcased determination to fight back from his injury concerns and remains an important player.

Lamela may have a big decision to make if Inter do come in, as he would be more likely to get minutes in Milan than at Tottenham. But given the exciting direction Spurs are moving in at the moment, he might not be in any hurry to go elsewhere, either.
