Arsenal Transfer News: Malcom Bid Confirmed, Willem Geubbels Price Reported

Tom SunderlandMar 4, 2018

Arsenal reportedly failed in their bid to recruit Bordeaux winger Malcom during the January transfer window after having a substantial bid for the player rejected. Elsewhere, Lyon are understood to have placed a £62.5 million price tag on alleged Gunners target Willem Geubbels.

Among the clubs linked with a winter move for Malcom were Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich, and German newspaper Bild reported the Gunners offered €42 million (£37.5 million) for his services (h/t Charles Watts of Football.London).

Malcom has scored eight goals and crafted six assists in 25 Ligue 1 appearances this season, and Bordeaux are understood to be chasing €60 million (£53.5 million) in order to cash in, with only €10 million (£8.9 million) of that in add-ons.

There is a sense at his club that Malcom will leave in the foreseeable future, too, after manager Gus Poyet gave the impression the wing wizard's tenure in Bordeaux is coming to a close, per Marca (h/t Goal):

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger did bring a right-sided specialist to the Emirates Stadium in January after landing Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United in exchange for Alexis Sanchez.

Malcom could head to the 2018 FIFA World Cup with Brazil this summer and increase his value again depending on any success at the tournament, potentially pricing Arsenal out of a deal should they revive interest.

Bild reported German giants Bayern and Borussia Dortmund are keeping an eye on the South American's situation, however, handing the Gunners even fiercer competition in their hunt (h/t Metro).

Malcom himself has been up front about his desire to seek a new challenge at the end of the current campaign, per Simon Collings of Hayters:

Meanwhile, French newspaper L'Equipe reported Lyon have put an eye-watering €70 million (£62.5 million) valuation on Geubbels, as they look to ward off the interest of Europe's major clubs (h/t Sunday People).

Barcelona, Manchester City and Chelsea are also said to be on the striker's list of suitors, months after the 16-year-old made a small piece of European football history, per Tifo Football:

Get French Football News cited French radio station RMC and Goal in reporting the teenager does not intend to sign a professional contract at Lyon when he turns 17 in August, with AS Monaco the favourites to recruit him.

Geubbels made his Ligue 1 debut earlier this year and has made three appearances for the club this term, although it now seems only a matter of time before he departs.
