Aly Raisman Sues USOC over Larry Nassar Sexual Assault Scandal

Alec NathanMar 2, 2018

Aly Raisman has filed a lawsuit against the United States Olympic Committee alleging it "knew or should have known" disgraced physician Larry Nassar sexually abused women and girls on the gymnastics team under the guise of medical treatment.

"After all this time, they remain unwilling to conduct a full investigation, and without a solid understanding of how this happened, it is delusional to think sufficient changes can be implemented," Raisman said in a statement on Friday, per the official complaint

"I refuse to wait any longer for these organizations to do the right thing. It is my hope that the legal process will hold them accountable and enable the change that is so desperately needed."

The three-time Olympic gold medalist was among those who testified against Nassar at his week-long sentencing hearing in January.

Raisman called out the USOC and USA Gymnastics for not being proactive when she first disclosed the allegations to the governing bodies.

"Where is the honesty? Where is the transparency? Why must the manipulation continue?" she asked, according to CNN's Eric Levenson

"They have been quick to capitalize on my success. But did they reach out when I came forward? No."

A group of United States senators has since called for an investigation into how the USOC and USA Gymnastics handled allegations of Nassar's abuse.

"This was not a simple case of negligence or failed oversight," Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire) said, according to Connor

Nassar, 54, will spend the rest of his life in prison after he was sentenced in three separate cases to 60, 40 to 175 and 40 to 125 years behind bars, respectively, on child pornography charges and for sexually abusing more than 150 women and girls.
