Neymar Reportedly Wants PSG to Sell Kylian Mbappe to Aid Philippe Coutinho Swap

Tom SunderlandFeb 26, 2018

Paris Saint-Germain will reportedly consider offloading Kylian Mbappe to keep world-record signing Neymar happy amid speculation the Brazilian is growing "increasingly jealous" of his French team-mate. It's also reported PSG could send Mbappe to Barcelona if they land Philippe Coutinho in return.

Diego Torres Romano reported for Spanish newspaper El Pais (h/t Metro) that Neymar isn't enjoying the threat Mbappe poses on his status at the Parc des Princes, via ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan:

Neymar has enjoyed a hugely successful start to life in France as far as his figures on the pitch are concerned, scoring 29 goals in 29 games along with 17 assists, but all is said to not be well in the PSG changing room.

Metro referred to Neymar's previous run-in with striker Edinson Cavani prior to this alleged rift with Mbappe, who scored his 15th goal of the campaign in Sunday's 3-0 thrashing of Marseille in Le Classique, via Goal:

Mbappe is still technically an AS Monaco player, as Fabrizio Romano and Marcus Christenson reported for the Guardian last summer that Mbappe would be loaned to PSG with an option to buy for €155 million.

The decision to loan Mbappe first before sealing a permanent move in 2018 was largely seen as a method for PSG to recruit the player while still meeting UEFA's financial fair play regulations.

PSG are set to make the Mbappe signing permanent this summer, though, with ESPN.com's Jonathan Johnson reporting a clause had been triggered after the Ligue 1 leaders confirmed they won't be relegated this season.

With that in mind, they may struggle to find a suitor with the desire to spend such a massive fee on his services, with Barca having spent heavily to sign Coutinho in January.

It seems unlikely Barca would be willing to sell or that Coutinho would want to move again so soon—or at all—even though he and Neymar grew up in Brazil's youth ranks together.

The pair remain close friends, and Coutinho spoke of Neymar's well wishes upon joining the Blaugrana, despite just missing out on playing alongside one another, via Goal:

So severe is Neymar's apparent dislike for Mbappe that he's even neglected passing to the 19-year-old when available at times, according to El Pais, instructing fellow Brazilian and former Barca team-mate Dani Alves to follow suit.

Rather than run the risk of their rivalry intensifying, PSG figureheads are said to be discussing a potential switch with Barcelona, preferring to keep a player with truly elite numbers to his name, per OptaPaolo:

It's taken huge investment to get both players to Paris, but it seems Neymar will take precedence in PSG's efforts to keep equilibrium at the club, but only if the right deal can be found to sell Mbappe elsewhere.

That's a big "if" due to the magnitude of the figures involved, and PSG may be discovering the difficulties that come with assembling their own team of Galacticos.
