Trae Young on Oklahoma's 6-Game Losing Streak: 'We'll Get Better'

Mike ChiariFeb 20, 2018

Oklahoma Sooners superstar guard Trae Young remained positive after his team lost its sixth consecutive game Monday.

Following a 104-74 defeat at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks, Young expressed confidence that things will turn around, according to ESPN.com's Mitch Sherman: "I know we've got three more games. If we take care of business like we're supposed to, these next three games will be fine. ... We know we have to win at least two. We've got to get better. We'll get better."

Oklahoma is now 16-11 overall, and it is eighth in the Big 12 with a 6-9 conference mark.

Young struggled mightily in Monday's losing effort, as he shot just 3-of-13 from the field and 1-of-5 from long range for a career-low 11 points to go along with nine assists.

Despite Oklahoma's recent struggles, Young still leads the nation with 28.3 points and 9.2 assists per game.

After narrow defeats to Texas and West Virginia, each of Oklahoma's past four losses have been by eight points or more.

With regard to Oklahoma's skid, Young pointed toward the cyclical nature of basketball as a reason why things could tilt back in the Sooners' favor in the near future: "I've played a lot of basketball during my life—and it's not always been good. ... It's bound to happen at some point. But it can be right back on my side, starting Saturday."

Young has made just five of his 32 three-point attempts over his past four games, and defensive focus by the opposition may have something to do with it.

When asked about how he was being defended last week, Young acknowledged that it has been a challenge, per ESPN.com's Jake Trotter"I'm getting guarded like nobody else in the country is being guarded, scouted on like no one else in the country is. It's a mystery coming out each and every game to try and figure out how a team is going to guard me and how I'm going to dictate how my team wins."

Despite a nightmarish losing streak, Oklahoma still has an opportunity to bounce back before the start of the Big 12 tournament.

The Sooners close out the regular season with a home game against Kansas State, a road clash with Baylor and another home contest with Iowa State.

Oklahoma has lost to both Kansas State and Iowa State this season, but beaten Baylor.

The Sooners' next chance at redemption will come Saturday against KSU.
