Kirk Cousins Will Sign with Broncos in Free Agency, Says Redskins' DJ Swearinger

Rob GoldbergFeb 19, 2018

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is likely looking for a new home this offseason, and his teammate D.J. Swearinger believes he will end up with the Denver Broncos, per Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network.

Although Cousins has spent his entire six-year career with the Redskins, the team apparently already found the free agent's replacement in Alex Smith after acquiring him in a trade with the Chiefs.

The Redskins have reportedly considered placing a franchise tag on Cousins, limiting his options by choosing which team to trade him to, but the quarterback would file a grievance with the NFL in that situation, per Kimberly A. Martin of the Washington Post.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network broke down why a franchise tag is unlikely anyway:

This should mean Cousins will get a chance to choose his next destination, and the Broncos make a lot of sense as an option.

Denver finished last season with a 5-11 record despite a defense that ranked third in yards allowed. Quarterback play was a major problem as Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch combined to throw 19 touchdowns with 22 intereptions, totaling a 73.0 quarterback rating.

However, the Broncos aren't even the odds-on favorite to land Cousins, as Bleacher Report's Matt Miller noted:

The Jets have been looking for a franchise quarterback for years, and with Christian Hackenberg failing to see the field in two seasons, it's clear the team needs a new answer at the position.
