Valencia's Late Goal Gives Man United 1-0 Win Against CSKA Moscow

Andrew JordanOct 21, 2009

On October 21st, Manchester United travelled to the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow to take on CSKA Moscow.

For Man United, this was their first ever trip back to the Luzhniki Stadium since the 2008 Champions League final, where they beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties, and United were also looking to build on their lead in Group B in this match.

However, Man United were playing without the services of Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher, Patrice Evra and Ji-Sung Park, which made many think that United were only playing for a draw, especially with an important match against Liverpool on Sunday.

Meanwhile for CSKA Moscow, they were looking to win their second straight Champions League match after beating Besiktas 2-1 in Moscow during Matchday two.

Towards the end of the first half, Moscow started to control the game, but they weren't able to get a real good shooting opportunity on the United goal, and at the half, the game was scoreless.

With of the start of the new half, both sides started to attack each other's goal, but they weren't able to finish their chances, and the game continued scoreless.

In the 80th minute however, Nani and Antonio Valencia combined for a great effort, and Valencia took a shot from about 18 yards out, but the shot hit the crossbar.

But Valencia did not let this miss affect him, and six minutes later he was able to give Man United a 1-0 lead after Nani made a great cross to Dimitar Berbatov, who then flicked it to Valencia, who scored and gave Manchester United a 1-0 lead.

After the goal, United's left back Fabio had to be taken off on a stretcher, causing Michael Carrick to come in, but it turned out that Fabio had cramps in his leg, causing him to be taken out.

But Moscow was not able to get any more good opportunities, and the game ended with Manchester United beating CSKA Moscow 1-0.

With the win, United have put themselves in a great position to qualify for the Round of 16, while Moscow will now find themselves fighting to get into the next round.

These two sides will meet each other again during Matchday four on November 3rd at Old Trafford.
