UFC's Most Underrated Fighter Chokes Opponent Out After Brutal Spinning Backfist
UFC flyweight Jussier Formiga doesn't get any respect.
Even before setting foot in the Octagon, he was widely regarded as one of the best fighters in his division. And in the five years since? He's proved his elite status several times over.
The latest example of this came at UFC 221 in Perth, Australia, where the Brazilian posted a brutal stoppage win over No. 8-ranked Ben Nguyen.
After two solid, back-and-forth rounds, the Brazilian took advantage of a weak offensive push by Nguyen by swinging around for a brutal spinning backfist. It landed hard and sent Nguyen crashing to the mat. A bit of ground-and-pound put Nguyen onto his stomach, and from there, Formiga slapped on a merciful rear-naked choke.
Now riding back-to-back stoppage wins over solid opponents, Formiga (21-5) is in position to push for a title fight against long-reigning champion Demetrious Johnson. And as the only high-end flyweight who has yet to fight for the title, it's hard to make a case against him.
