Billy Joe Saunders Criticises Amir Khan for 'Watergate', Cheating Accusations

Gianni VerschuerenFeb 7, 2018

WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders has weighed in on the controversial press conference involving Amir Khan and Phil Lo Greco, saying Khan has only himself to blame.

Khan and Lo Greco will face off in April and made headlines during a press conference in January, where the Canadian taunted his opponent by joking about Khan's accusations his wife had engaged in an affair with heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, per TalkSport. In response, Khan threw the glass of water.

The couple has since reunited after the infidelity allegations.

In an interview with the iFL TV YouTube channel (h/t Niall Doran of Boxing News and Views), Saunders said Khan should have known those accusations would be used against him:

"Listen, you can't be talking s--t. If your woman is a slut or a prostitute or whatever she is, and she is, you can't accuse her of going with men then next week turn up at a press conference with a boxer because that is going to come out.

"That was a very dumb thing to do from Amir Khan. Whether she's in the right or she's in the wrong. Listen, he calls it for himself but he handled it completely wrong. He should have hit him (Lo Greco) with the glass not the water."

Here's video of the interview, with the segment on Khan starting at roughly 11:40 (contains NSFW language):

Per Doran, Saunders has taken shots at Khan in the past. He's also a training partner of Kell Brook, a longtime rival and potential future opponent of Khan.

Khan hasn't fought since 2016, when he moved up to welterweight to face Canelo Alvarez and lost by KO in the sixth round. His bout with Lo Greco is seen as a warm-up fight to set up a more lucrative matchup later this year―possibly with Brook, who will be in action in March against Siarhei Rabchanka.

The undefeated Saunders is one of Britain's most decorated fighters but has long flown under the radar, with his record sporting few big names. He does hold wins over Chris Eubank Jr. and David Lemieux and is a likely opponent for the winner of the rematch between Canelo and Gennady Golovkin.
