Manchester United Transfer News: Christian Pulisic Rumours, Wilson Tilve Trial

Tom SunderlandFeb 5, 2018

Manchester United will reportedly attempt to pip Premier League rivals Liverpool to the signing of Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic, who is also understood to be attracting Bayern Munich's interest.

German newspaper Sport Bild noted the Red Devils are ready to contest for the signature of the United States international this summer amid rumours Liverpool are also in hot pursuit (h/t the Daily Mirror).

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was still at the Borussia Dortmund helm when Pulisic moved to the club from his native Pennsylvania in February 2015, months before the coach announced he was ending his seven-year stay at the Westfalenstadion.

The speculation has revived talk of a reunion between player and manager since Pulisic shot to first-team fame at BVB, and the Liverpool Echo's Kristian Walsh said Klopp would be willing to wait for his man:

United could be perceived as being at a disadvantage in that sense, but manager Jose Mourinho nevertheless appears eager to sign one of the most sought-after young talents from Europe's top leagues.

Pulisic is understandably viewed as a potential marketing phenomenon, too, as noted by the Mirror, in that he looks to be the best American talent of this generation and could be worth a lot of money in merchandise.

Aside from that, the 19-year-old has shown himself to be a whiz on the Dortmund wing, having already racked up 81 senior appearances for the Black and Yellows, a little under two years since making his first-team debut.

However, this season's performances haven't quite captivated in the same way Pulisic did last term, and after netting just four goals and recording two assists in 26 games this term, football writer Lars Pollmann noted his drop in form:

That lull could be valuable for Pulisic's suitors in their attempts to barter for a cheaper deal in the summer, although there are questions as to where he'd fit at Old Trafford after Alexis Sanchez's arrival from Arsenal.

The Red Devils just sent Henrikh Mkhitaryan—another purchase from Dortmund—to the Emirates Stadium in order to get their hands on Sanchez, although blogger Liam Canning says Pulisic would be worth the same risk:

Marcus Rashford, 20, is one youngster already looking to make an impression in United's attack, while Anthony Martial, 22, could also be threatened by the purchase of a wide talent such as Pulisic.

The American will likely want some assurances over the playing time he's likely to receive at his next club, wherever that may be, and there may be questions whether United would be his best choice in that regard.

Elsewhere, United have handed a trial to Colombian teenager Wilson Tilve, 16, who joined in sessions at the Carrington training facility last week, per Alex Porter of the Manchester Evening News.

Tilve, who plays for Club Atletico Colombia de Cartagena in his native country, is the first Colombian to be taken on trial at Old Trafford and is also said to be attracting interest from other clubs in his homeland.
