Super Bowl Halftime Show 2018: Prop Odds, Predictions for Justin Timberlake

Chris RolingFeb 4, 2018

Justin Timberlake is back at the Super Bowl once more, this time allegedly on his lonesome to provide some halftime entertainment once the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots hit the halfway mark.

Intrigue surrounds the halftime performance as much as it does the game itself, though.

Whereas this game is hard to get a read on because the Eagles have a backup in Nick Foles going against Tom Brady, it might be even harder to predict what Timberlake has planned based on his affiliations and past performances.

One can't have a Super Bowl with a performance by Timberlake without involving the name Janet Jackson.

Jackson has already gone out of her way to make it clear she won't be on the stage in Minnesota on Sunday night.

"To put to rest any speculation or rumors as to whether I will be performing at the Super Bowl tomorrow: I will not," Jackson told People's Alexia Fernandez and Janine Rubenstein.

But thanks to their gaffe at an earlier Super Bowl performance, would-be bettors can likely take the over with confidence as it pertains to the 1.5 line featuring her name. Broadcasters are sure to bring it up at least a few times, though whether they'll be allowed to get creative enough via saying something like "Nipplegate" doesn't seem likely, so roll with no.

General attire lines are there as well and akin to betting on the result of the coin flip or if a performer forgets a line during the national anthem. Based on the cover and style of his new album, Man of the Woods, yes to both a hat and a beard would make some sense. Similar story with shoes and microphone, where would-be bettors are left to roll the dice on their own.

The actual content of the performance is an interesting one. How Timberlake decides to proceed through a lengthy set of hits is something up for debate. He'll obviously trot out some stuff from his new album, though it is hard to imagine he'll go with something new to start the performance.

Pepsi marketing director Aziel Rivers hinted at a strong mix of both after watching rehearsals.

"It's Justin at his best," Rivers said, according to Billboard's Taylor Weatherby. "So think of all the things that make Justin one of the world's biggest performers—you're going to see that and more than you would ever expect on the stage. He's bringing iconic songs that you're like 'Oh my God, I forgot that was my jam from back in the day!' and some really interesting stuff that maybe you haven't heard before."

Again, though, bettors are best left to their own devices when it comes to picking the opener. "Filthy" is the favorite for a reason, though, and its instrumental opening seems like it could coincide nicely with Timberlake himself making an epic entrance.

Then there's the topic of Prince. It seems obvious to roll with the yes option when confronted with deciding whether Timberlake will cover a Prince song.

"The greatest all-around musician who I can think of in popular culture," Timberlake said of Prince, according to CBSSports.com's John Breech. "The time I get to spend around him, with him, talking about music, those are memories I'll take with me forever because he's always been such a big idol of mine."

The question is more about how, as TMZ reported an interesting bit of alleged spoilers about the performance and Prince. Either way, the idea Timberlake pays homage by covering a song seems like one of the easiest bets of the night.

Similar story for whether he hooks up with a member of his former band, *NSYNC. All signs point to no, so it's best to avoid the urge.

It might seem obvious Timberlake would feature heavyweights of his past in a performance like this, but viewers should remember we're starting to see a trend of performances like the one put on by Lady Gaga that didn't feature many major guest appearances.

With an album of his own and a laundry list of hits to work through, prop odds centered on guests might be fool's gold. Those hits and Timberlake's ability will make it an entertaining performance either way.
