Eagles Reportedly Tried to Reacquire LeSean McCoy in Jordan Matthews Trade

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly angled for a reunion with running back LeSean McCoy prior to the 2017 season.

According to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta, Eagles Vice President of Football Operations Howie Roseman "tried to get McCoy back in a deal with Buffalo through back-channel intermediaries" in exchange for a package of players that included wide receiver Jordan Matthews.

However, Roseman wasn't able to swing the trade and shipped Matthews and a 2018 third-round draft pick to Buffalo for cornerback Ronald Darby.

With McCoy still in Buffalo, the Eagles shored up the running back position by signing veteran bulldozer LeGarrette Blount to a one-year deal in free agency before acquiring Jay Ajayi at the trade deadline from the Miami Dolphins.

McCoy spent the first six years of his career with the Eagles after he was selected in the second round of the 2009 draft.

During that time, Shady emerged as one of the NFL's premier game-breakers out of the backfield and rushed for 6,792 yards and 44 touchdowns. He also caught 300 passes for 2,282 yards and 10 scores with the Birds.

However, McCoy was unceremoniously traded in March 2015 as head coach Chip Kelly continued to shake up the team's stable of playmakers. DeMarco Murray, then the league's reigning rushing champion, signed on as McCoy's replacement but underwhelmed during his lone year in the City of Brotherly Love.

Once Kelly was fired, Roseman made sweeping changes to the roster and shipped Murray to the Tennessee Titans.

Now two seasons removed from Kelly's divisive tenure, the Eagles will try to secure their first Super Bowl title Sunday when they meet the New England Patriots at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
