Tom Izzo Declines Comment on MSU Scandal: 'I Gotta Have My Rights Too'

Rob GoldbergJan 31, 2018

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo continues to remain silent on his role in the school's handling of sexual assault allegations that recently came to light.

"I watch a lot of TV, and I see on shows that everybody thinks that everybody has the right to ask a question," Izzo said Wednesday after the Spartans game against Penn State, per Michele Steele of ESPN. "But I gotta have my rights, too. When time comes, I'll be able to speak out. I know it might be frustrating, but—it's just what I gotta do."

While the school was under investigation for its handling of Larry Nassar, Paula Lavigne and Nicole Noren of Outside the Lines reported last week there were allegations involving the programs of both Izzo and football coach Mark Dantonio.

The Outside the Lines report detailed several allegations including former basketball players and a former student-assistant coach.

President Lou Anna Simon and athletic director Mark Hollis had already resigned amid the Nassar scandal before the OTL report.

Izzo was last questioned about the issue after Sunday's game versus Maryland, and Izzo was short on answers, via Josh Stirn of 247Sports:

He got another chance after his team's win over Penn State Wednesday, but while he was more prepared for the questions, he still didn't provide the answers some were hoping to hear.

"I think there'll be a time when I'll be able to speak, but it isn't right now," Izzo said after the game. "There's too many things going on, with the survivors and everything."

Michigan State next plays on Saturday at Indiana.
