Oscar De La Hoya Says Floyd Mayweather Would Be 'Out in 10 Seconds' in MMA

Matt JonesJan 29, 2018

Oscar De La Hoya has predicted his former rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. would last less than 10 seconds if he was to compete in MMA.

Mayweather's previous outing saw him take on Conor McGregor, who was making his professional boxing debut having changed codes from the UFC.

Unsurprisingly, Mayweather won the bout and extended his record to 50 wins from 50 fights. When TMZ asked De La Hoya how Money would fare if the roles were reversed, he said the boxer would struggle to make the fight a contest:

"Tapped out in 10 seconds," said the Golden Boy as he walked into the Staples Center for a Los Angeles Lakers game.

After McGregor made the switch from the Octagon to the boxing ring, there has been some buzz about Mayweather doing something similar.

But speaking to FightHype in December (h/t MMA Weekly's Damon Martin), Mayweather said he wouldn't be delving into the UFC any time soon.

"I never said I was going to fight in the UFC," he said. "I didn't say that. I said if I wanted to and what I could do. I'm not going to do it though."

McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, made his feelings clear on the matter on Twitter in December:

It would be a surprise to see Mayweather in action in any professional combat sports again, with the win over McGregor taking his career record to the landmark 50-0.

Now 40 years old, the five-weight world champion admitted in the buildup to the clash with the UFC lightweight champion that "I am not the fighter I once was," per Luke Brown of The Independent.

De La Hoya, meanwhile, said in December he would like to link up with UFC boss Dana White about booking "the biggest fights," per TMZ. The 44-year-old, who founded Golden Boy Promotions, was defeated by Mayweather via split decision in their 2007 showdown.
