Super Bowl 2018: Updated Spread, Odds, Money Lines for Eagles vs. Patriots

Steve SilvermanJan 29, 2018

The New England Patriots are still favored in Super Bowl LII over the Philadelphia Eagles, but the spread has moved toward the Eagles after one week of betting.

The Patriots are listed as 4.5-point favorites over the Eagles in Sunday's 6:30 p.m. ET game at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, according to OddsShark. The Pats were listed as 6.5-point favorites when the Super Bowl point spread was established following the AFC and NFC Championship Games.

The total in the game is listed at 48 points. New England is -175 (bet $175 to win $100) on the money line, while the Eagles are +155.

This game appears to be a high-scoring matchup between two evenly matched opponents. The Eagles were a dominant team through the majority of the season, but they took a major hit when quarterback Carson Wentz suffered an ACL injury in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Backup Nick Foles struggled after taking over at quarterback in the final two games of the regular season, but things have turned back in a positive direction during the playoffs.

Foles was solid in the Eagles' divisional-round victory over the Atlanta Falcons, and he was much better than that in Philadelphia's 38-7 triumph over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC title game. The 29-year-old threw three TD passes in that game, and he was able to put the game out of reach early in the third quarter.

If the Eagles are back to the form they had earlier in the season, they will be a major challenge for the Patriots. However, New England head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady have faced major challenges throughout their long run that has already brought them five Super Bowl titles.

The Patriots are going for back-to-back NFL championships, and their third in four seasons.

While Philadelphia has an impressive offense that ranks seventh in yards gained, the Patriots are second in that category.

Wideout Alshon Jeffery presents a major challenge for the New England defense.

Both teams will attack with versatile offenses, and they will likely make it difficult on their defensive counterparts. The Eagles have a solid running attack with Jay Ajayi and former Patriot LeGarrette Blount, and a crew of dangerous receivers in Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, Torrey Smith and tight end Zach Ertz.

New England is improved on defense after a miserable start through the first four games, but they still ranked 28th in yards allowed.

The Eagles have a much stronger defense, ranking fourth in yards allowed, but the Patriots have proved themselves on offense time and time again.

Brady threw 32 touchdown passes in the regular season, and he has a 5-0 TD-interception ratio in the postseason. His recent postseason legacy includes leading the Patriots back from a 28-3 deficit to win last year's Super Bowl, and he brought them back from a 10-point deficit against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC title game this season.

The Patriots have a decent running attack with Dion Lewis, and Brady is on the same page as receivers Danny Amendola, Brandin Cooks and Chris Hogan. If tight end Rob Gronkowski is able to overcome his concussion and play against the Eagles, it will give Brady one more key target.

Gronkowski participated in practice Saturday, but he is not assured of playing in the game.

This should be a back-and-forth, high-scoring game, but it's difficult to see the Eagles getting the best of the Patriots when the title is on the line in the fourth quarter.
