Borussia Dortmund have reportedly given up their pursuit of Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, although it's said the Gunners will still to be able to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as long as his valuation is met.

Giroud has become involved in discussions for Aubameyang as a potential makeweight in the deal, but Simon Jones reported for MailOnline that Dortmund are now reluctant on a transfer after opening negotiations.

The north Londoners are reported to be thrashing out talks over Aubameyang's future, but the Black and Yellows want around £56 million for their frontman, a figure Arsenal don't look likely to match just yet.

BBC Sport's Simon Stone provided an update on the winter transfer saga on Wednesday, with manager Arsene Wenger's side still some way off meeting Aubameyang's asking price:

Jones mentioned in his report that Giroud is now "assessing other options," and it's possible a move away—or a loan at the very least—may appeal with the 2018 FIFA World Cup fast approaching.

Hayters Sports Agency reporter Simon Collings previously detailed the cost of Giroud's loan move to the Westfalenstadion, a tentative agreement that appears to have since been taken off the table:

Giroud, 31, is targeting a place in France's World Cup squad and will want to improve significantly on this season's record of seven goals in 25 appearances for Arsenal, although only 10 of those have been as a starter.

Wenger has encountered a line of questioning regarding both Aubameyang and Giroud of late, and the Mirror's John Cross attested to the Frenchman perhaps being open to his fringe player leaving the Emirates Stadium:

Giroud moved to north London from Montepellier in 2012 and has been a reliable leader of the line at Arsenal, albeit never quite hitting the superstar levels they might hope to see club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette produce.

That said, Squawka's Greg Johnson argued the forward has earned a move away from the Emirates to pursue more first-team minutes elsewhere:

It seems highly unlikely Dortmund will pursue a move for Giroud unless they have to part ways with Aubameyang, and Arsenal look like the team most capable of facilitating that departure as things stand.

Dortmund will reportedly turn to Chelsea's Michy Batshuayi as their alternative to replace Aubameyang in the event he does leave, per Jones, with the future of their Gabon striker still up in the air with only days left in the transfer window.
