Jimmy Garoppolo Rumors: 49ers, QB Have 'Common Interests' in Contract Extension

Mike ChiariJan 25, 2018

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said Wednesday that the organization and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo both want to get a long-term extension done this offseason.

Appearing on NFL Network (h/t Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area), Lynch said, "Now the challenge is getting Jimmy signed. We're working hard toward that. We'll see. I think he wants to be with us, and we want him there. It makes too much sense for it not to happen. It's just a matter of getting it done."

Lynch also expressed confidence that the 49ers have shored up the most important position in football: "[Garoppolo] was a great addition to our team—kind of a game-changer. When you find the right guy at that position, it's really good for your franchise. We believe we found the right guy."

The Niners acquired Garoppolo from the New England Patriots prior to the trade deadline in exchange for a 2018 second-round draft pick.

After starting the season 1-10, San Francisco's year did a 180-degree turn with Garoppolo at the helm.

The 2014 second-round pick went 5-0 as a starter and finished the season with 1,560 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns and five interceptions, as well as a rushing score.

Garoppolo stands to land one of the richest quarterback contracts in recent memory due to the potential he has shown at just 26 years of age.

If San Francisco is unwilling to make a long-term commitment to Garoppolo at a massive price, however, it has the option of keeping him for one season with the franchise tag, making it unlikely he will play with any other team in 2018.
