2018 NFL Draft Order: Updated Selection List After Divisional Round

David KenyonJan 14, 2018

The group of teams remaining in the playoffs is getting thinner, but the NFL draft order is becoming clearer every week.

Four more teamsthe Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saintsexited the postseason in the divisional round, ensuring the official end of their 2017 campaign.

Atlanta failed to muster enough offense against the Carson Wentz-less Philadelphia Eagles, and the Titans were unable to match the pace of the New England Patriots. The Steelers surrendered a season-worst 45 points, and the Saints lost on a stunning walk-off touchdown.

Each of those franchises fell short of the ultimate goal, but they'll quickly focus on the draft and attempt to regroup for a run next season.

Note: A coin flip will determine whether the Oakland Raiders or San Francisco 49ers will own the No. 9 selection.

After two years of passing on quarterbacks in the first round, the Cleveland Browns appear set to select a signal-caller at No. 1 overall in 2018. Top options include UCLA's Josh Rosen, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield and USC's Sam Darnold. Wyoming's Josh Allen may also be considered.

It seems the New York Giants will also target a quarterback in an effort to find the potential replacement for Eli Manning. At 37 years old, the two-time Super Bowl champion is nearing the end of his career.

But then things get interesting.

Despite the uncertain health of Andrew Luck, the Indianapolis Colts shouldn't need a quarterback. They could bolster the roster with Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, NC State defensive end Bradley Chubb or Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted nine passes in three seasons at Alabama.

Or, the Colts could be positioned well to host an auction.

Since two respected quarterbacks may be off the board at that point, three teams could be fighting over the same prospect. Indianapolisand perhaps Cleveland at No. 4could be in trade-down territory if the Denver Broncos, New York Jets or Arizona Cardinals feel strongly enough about an available quarterback.

Denver tried three different players in 2017 and didn't find a long-term answer. New York cannot rely on Josh McCown much longer. Arizona must address the position because Carson Palmer decided to retire after the season.

One big factor for those three franchises is whether they're interested in Kansas City Chiefs veteran Alex Smith. Kirk Cousins' free agency may affect the quarterback landscape, too.

Indianapolis may feel confident enough about Barkley, Chubb and Fitzpatrick that dropping a few spots in exchange for additional draft capital wouldn't affect the team's strategy anyway. The same goes for Cleveland with the fourth pick.

Other franchises expected to consider a signal-caller in the opening round include the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints. The teams likely won't trade up, but Allen, Louisville's Lamar Jackson and Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph are each worth monitoring for those clubs.

Whether it's right, wrong or somewhere in between, Buffalo seems not to be sold on Tyrod Taylor as the long-term guy. Blake Bortles hasn't inspired consistent hope in Jacksonville, and New Orleans must be prepared for the post-Drew Brees era.

Those teams may feel 2018 is the proper time to address the position.

Given the likelihood of five-plus quarterbacks taken in the first round, there should be plenty of trade rumors surrounding teams jostling for draft position heading into April.
