Kenny Omega Reportedly Agrees to New Contract with NJPW

Mike ChiariJan 11, 2018

New Japan Pro-Wrestling star Kenny Omega reportedly isn't coming to WWE in 2018.

According to Dave Meltzer of theย Wrestling Observer Newsletterย (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News), Omega has signed a new contract with NJPW that will run through Jan. 31, 2019.

The Canadian is the IWGP United States heavyweight champion for New Japan.

Omega is coming off one of the biggest performances of his career, as he defeated Chris Jericho in a No Disqualification match at Wrestle Kingdom 12 on Jan. 4.

Wrestle Kingdom is New Japan's version of WrestleMania, and perhaps no match in Wrestle Kingdom history has generated more global buzz than the clash between Jericho and Omega.

Since Jericho has long been committed to WWE, it came as a shock when he decided to compete for NJPW, but the decision turned out to be a good one in terms of capturing the attention of pro wrestling fans across the world.

Due to the fact Omega has already accomplished so much in NJPW, there has been no shortage of speculation regarding a possible leap to WWE.

While the 34-year-old has yet to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, he is the U.S. titleholder and has also won the Intercontinental Championship, Junior Heavyweight Championship, Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship and NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship.

Omega also won the 2016 G1 Climax and headlined Wrestle Kingdom 11 in a classic against Kazuchika Okada.

With WWE's Royal Rumble coming up Jan. 28, many fans were hopeful he would join the company and compete as a surprise entrant, in much the same way AJ Styles did in 2016.

That won't happen in 2018, barring an unforeseen agreement, but Omega will continue to spearhead New Japan's American expansion throughout the year while also potentially making another run at the one title that has eluded him in the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.
