Chelsea Transfer News: Gianluigi Donnarumma Eyed as Thibaut Courtois Replacement

Rory MarsdenJan 7, 2018

Chelsea will reportedly target AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma if they lose current No. 1 Thibaut Courtois.

According to Mundo Deportivo (via Goal), the Stamford Bridge outfit are still hoping to get the Belgian stopper to sign a new deal with the club but will go after Donnarumma if he does leave in the summer.

Courtois, 25, has been heavily linked with Real Madrid recently, and he has admitted he is tempted by a return to Spain—he previously spent three years on loan at Atletico Madrid—because it is where his children live, per LaSexta (via Simon Johnson in the Evening Standard).

Meanwhile, Donnarumma's relationship with the Milan fans has broken down recently, and it looks as though he is set for the exit door at the San Siro, per James Walker-Roberts of Sky Sports.

The 18-year-old is widely rated as Europe's most talented young goalkeeper and would be a fine replacement for Courtois should the Blues lose their No. 1.

However, the west London side are unlikely to be the only top club to pursue Donnarumma should he leave the Rossoneri.

Paris Saint-Germain are one of the European giants to have been heavily linked with the Italy international, per Sky Sport Italia (via MailOnline's Tom Bassam).

Chelsea may struggle to prevail if it comes down to a bidding war between them and PSG given the Ligue 1 club's significant financial clout.

There is also the possibility Donnarumma could stay at Milan.

He came through the Milan youth academy and, despite the recent fallout with fans, has insisted he is still happy at the club, per Mediaset Premium (via Football Italia): "I have a four-year contract and I am happy here."

The ideal scenario for Chelsea would be that Courtois signs a new deal—his current contract expires in 2019—and remains at Stamford Bridge beyond the summer.

However, given the uncertainty over the Belgium international's future, it is little surprise Chelsea are reportedly monitoring a player of Donnarumma's talent as a potential replacement.
