NFL Playoff Picture 2018: Latest Super Bowl Bracket and AFC, NFC Scenarios

David McCrackenDec 26, 2017

For many NFL teams, Week 17 is the end of the road. For others, everything is on the line.

While the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers have clinched first-round byes in the AFC, there is still homefield advantage up for grabs.

In the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles secured the top seed and homefield advantage throughout the postseason, but that doesn't mean that the rest of the NFC playoff picture is set in stone, either.

With one week left in the 2017 NFL regular season, anything can happen. Here, we'll take a look at the AFC/NFC standings and playoff picture, with scenarios for every team in contention for a playoff spotexcluding the Eagles who can't improve or regress their current standing no matter what happens next weekend.

AFC Standings

1. New England Patriots (12-3); clinched first-round bye

2. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-3); clinched first-round bye

3. Jacksonville Jaguars (10-5); clinched AFC South

4. Kansas City Chiefs (9-6); clinched AFC West

5. Baltimore Ravens (9-6)

6. Tennessee Titans (8-7)

In the hunt

7. Los Angeles Chargers (8-7)

8. Buffalo Bills (8-7)

The Patriots can clinch homefield advantage throughout the playoffs with a win, a Steelers loss or everyone's favorite potential outcome, a tie for both the Patriots and Steelers.

The Steelers can steal homefield advantage from New England with a win and a Patriots loss or a tie and a Patriots loss. Either way, the Patriots have to lose.

The Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh's AFC North rival, hold their destiny in their own hands. A win or tie in Week 17 will be enough to earn a spot in the postseason. Additionally, a Bills loss/tie or a Titans loss/tie would also work in their favor.

As for the Titans, they need to win to clinch a playoff berth. If they can't win, then a tie and a Bills loss/tie and a Chargers loss/tie would be enough. If the Bills and Chargers both lose next weekend, then the Titans would clinch a playoff berth regardless if they win or lose.

The Chargers need a lot of help to make the playoffs, and that all starts with winning in Week 17 along with a Titans loss/tie and a Bills loss/tie. They can also make the playoffs if they win and the Titans lose/tie along with a Ravens win/tie or to make things even more complicated, the Chargers can tie if the Titans lose and the Bills lose/tie.

Last but not least, the Bills need to win and have the Ravens lose in Week 17. Buffalo can also earn a spot in the Wild Card Round with a win, a Chargers loss/tie and a Titans loss/tie, or with a tie, a Chargers loss and a Titans loss.

NFC Standings

1. Philadelphia Eagles (13-2); clinched home field

2. Minnesota Vikings (12-3); clinched NFC North

3. Los Angeles Rams (11-4); clinched NFC West

4. New Orleans Saints (11-4); clinched playoff berth

5. Carolina Panthers (11-4); clinched playoff berth

6. Atlanta Falcons (9-6)

In the hunt

7. Seattle Seahawks (9-6)

Up north, the Vikings can clinch a first-round bye with a win/tie or a Panthers loss/tie. There is also a scenario where Minnesota clinches a first-round bye if the Saints win against the Falcons in Week 17, regardless of the Vikings result.

The Saints don't have much room for maneuvering in terms of playoff seeding, but they can clinch the NFC South division with a win, a Panthers loss, or a tie and a Panthers tie.

A team with a lot to lose and a lot to gain is the Panthers, who can clinch their division and a first-round bye if things go their way. Carolina can clinch the NFC South with a win, a Saints loss/tie or if the Panthers tie and the Saints lose. They can clinch a first-round bye with a win, a Saints loss/tie, a Vikings loss and a Rams loss/tie.

Atlanta can guarantee itself a playoff berth with a win over the Saints in Week 17 or a Seahawks loss. If the Falcons and Seahawks both tie, then the Falcons get the nod for a wild-card spot.

It's never wise to count out the Seahawks at this time of the year, regardless of the odds stacked against them. Seattle can still make the postseason with a win and a Falcons loss/tie. If the Seahawks tie, then they need the Falcons to lose. Either way, Atlanta can't win on Sunday if the Seahawks want any shot at making the playoffs.
