5-Star USC QB Commit JT Daniels Reclassifies, Will Enroll at USC in Spring

USC quarterback commit JT Daniels announced Friday he's reclassified to join the Trojans in 2018.

Daniels confirmed the decision to enroll a year earlier than expected in a video posted on Twitter:

The Mater Dei High School standout is a 5-star prospect who's now listed as the No. 21 overall prospect in the 2018 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. He's also rated No. 2 among both the pro-style QBs and California recruits.

Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times noted Daniels was named Gatorade National Player of the Year for football earlier this week to join a list that features NFL legends Emmitt Smith and Peyton Manning as well as former USC players Jeff Byers, Matt Barkley and Max Browne.

"This is one of the greatest awards in all of high school sports," he said. "At the end of the day, this is still a team award. I’m really honored to receive this, but this one goes to the Mater Dei community."

The quarterback's decision to arrive at USC early comes with the Trojans likely set to lose Sam Darnold, its starter at the position, to the 2018 NFL draft.

Although the redshirt sophomore hasn't announced his decision, he's projected to come off the board early assuming he does declare for the draft.

That would leave the door open for Daniels to compete to fill the void as a true freshman.
