JuJu Smith-Schuster Calls Jesse James' Overruled TD vs. Patriots 'Bitch Ass Call'

Rob GoldbergDec 17, 2017

The Steelers suffered a 27-24 loss to the Patriots Sunday, with a waved-off touchdown pass in the final minute playing a major role.

The league provided a video showcasing the would-be catch by Jesse James with an explanation for why it was called incomplete:

Rookie receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was especially upset about the official decision.

"It sucks, honestly. That was a bitch ass call by the refs," Smith-Schuster said, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. "I feel like he had ball control, he was in. In a game like that, when you go down and you finish the game like that, and then boom, momentum, and the next thing you know (the referee) said he didn't have control of the ball. Nobody touched him."

Smith-Schuster had a 69-yard catch to put the Steelers in position for the potential go-ahead score after the Patriots had taken the lead with 56 seconds remaining.

The next play to James seemed to give Pittsburgh the lead, but it ended up being incomplete. Two plays later, Ben Roethlisberger threw an interception to seal the loss.

James had a more tame reaction but was still confused by the ruling.

"I'm sick about it. I'll be thinking about this the rest of the night," the tight end said. "I had my knee down, turned up the field. Whether they consider that a football move or not is up to them to decide. I guess I don't know a lot of things about football. I thought it was a touchdown for sure."

The play will have a long-lasting impact, with the Patriots moving back into the No. 1 spot in the AFC standings. If they win out, they will have home-field advantage in the playoffs.
