Luis Suarez, Paulinho Lead Barcelona Past Deportivo in Dominant 4-0 Win

Gianni VerschuerenDec 17, 2017

Luis Suarez and Paulinho both scored twice as Barcelona cruised to a 4-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga on Sunday.

The goalscorers each struck once in the first half and once in the second, and the Catalans could have scored even more if not for some heroics from Depor goalkeeper Ruben Martinez.

Here's a look at the teamsheet:

Both teams started with plenty of attacking intentions, and the opening stages flew by. Just four minutes into the contest, Andres Iniesta picked up Lionel Messi with a perfect pass, and the Argentinian perhaps should have opened the scoring.

Suarez fared better three minutes later, but the offside flag went up just as the ball hit the back of the net. Lucas Perez put goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to work with a smart drive, and Sidnei made a good tackle after a great run from Messi, per sportswriter Sid Lowe:

Messi's shot didn't curl enough to bend past Ruben before a stoppage to allow Paco Alcacer to leave with an injury in the 23rd minute finally gave the players a breather.

Ruben made another fine stop from Messi and an even better one from Aleix Vidal, but he was finally beaten after 29 minutes when the Barca No. 10 got in behind the defence before laying off to Suarez for the easy finish.

Per Robbie Dunne of AS, it all started with a great pass from Iniesta, who spotted Messi's run:

Barcelona settled down after the goal but didn't let up, with Messi going close to doubling the lead when he hit the bar with a fantastic drive.

A second goal seemed inevitable, and it was Paulinho who got on the board four minutes before half-time, converting a rebound and cleverly timing his run so he was onside.

B/R Football couldn't help themselves:

The Blaugrana almost made it 3-0 before the interval, but Ruben somehow kept the ball from crossing the line with a spectacular save.

Barca beat Ruben in the 47th minute when Sergi Roberto picked out Suarez inside the box, and the Uruguayan bagged his second goal of the night.

Sports writer Roy Nemer loved it:

At the other end of the pitch, Carles Gil's shot from distance could only find the side netting.

Suarez wanted a penalty after light contact inside the box on 60 minutes, and Messi again hit the woodwork as Barcelona continued to push forward.

The Argentinian just missed the top corner with a curling shot, and Suarez was denied his hat-trick by Ruben, who didn't give up on the contest despite the score. The stopper even saved a penalty from Messi after 70 minutes, and Barcelona's Twitter account was impressed:

However, Paulinho was there to put the fourth goal away after 75 minutes in an almost perfect copy of his first goal. Once again, he avoided the offside trap to fire home a rebound.

Suarez joined the long list of players who hit the post as he tried to complete his hat-trick, and Messi almost got his goal after a quick corner but fired wide.

Barcelona increased their lead in La Liga to six points over Atletico Madrid. Their next outing is the highly anticipated Clasico at Real Madrid on Saturday.
