Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Mesut Ozil Rumours, Nabil Fekir Comments

Rob BlanchetteDec 17, 2017

Manchester United could capture Mesut Ozil for £8 million at the end of the season, with the Red Devils prepared to double the signing-on fee Arsenal have offered the Germany international.

Paul Hetherington of the Daily Star Sunday reported Ozil could be set to move to Old Trafford once his deal expires in the summer (h/t Metro). The attacker cost the Gunners £42.4 million when he joined from Real Madrid in 2013, and he could net a windfall if he opts to depart the Emirates Stadium as a free agent.

Per Hetherington, Ozil's representatives are seeking the aforementioned sum for their client, and with no transfer fee to pay, United could land one of the biggest steals in football.

Ozil was the hero as Arsenal edged out Newcastle United 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, scoring the winner midway through the first half.

Newcastle United's English-born Irish goalkeeper Rob Elliot (R) comes out to try to block an attempt by Arsenal's German midfielder Mesut Ozil (L) during the English Premier League football match between Arsenal and Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadiu

The volley saved manager Arsene Wenger's blushes, as the hosts struggled to convert against the lowly Magpies.

United have lacked creativity at vital moments this season, and Ozil's addition could transform the Mourinho's midfield's productivity.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has fallen out of favour at the Theatre of Dreams, potentially opening up a first-team position for Ozil.

Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News highlighted the German's performance against Newcastle:

The 29-year-old has three goals and five assists in the Premier League this season, and he could form a devastating partnership with Romelu Lukaku at United if deployed as a No. 10.

For the quoted signing-on fee, United would be foolish to ignore Ozil, and even though he turns 30 next October, his signing on a free transfer would represent incredible value.

In other United news, Olympique Lyonnais playmaker Nabil Fekir has said he would be interested in moving to one of the top sides in England.

Speaking to Telefoot, the France international revealed he would consider a switch to one of the big teams in La Liga or the Premier League, name-dropping United (h/t Tom Olver of Metro).

Fekir said:

"Spain, with Real [Madrid], Barcelona & Atletico [Madrid] who are the big clubs.

"After that there is England: Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal. I don't have a specific club [I want to go to].

"Is this my last season at Lyon? I don't know what the future holds for me. I've still got two years left on my contract. So, I'm still Lyonnais."

The 24-year-old typically plays as an attacking midfielder but also has the ability to feature as a striker.

Per Olver, Fekir is under contract until 2020 and only a huge offer would tempt his team to consider selling their captain. However, it is stated Lyon would not be willing sellers.

The attacker oozes potential, and he has been one of Ligue 1's best top-level prospects since his debut in 2013.

Fekir has grown into his role at Lyon, and the club will likely want to build its future around its skipper.

Ozil's potential arrival would negate the Red Devils' need to target the Lyon midfielder, with Fekir lacking the German's creativity and experience.

Mourinho watched his team limp past West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Sunday, winning 2-1 at the Hawthorns, but once again his men lacked the creativity needed to swiftly dispose of their opponents.

Ozil could correct that deficiency at Old Trafford, turning himself into a cult hero as United seek to emulate past glories.
