Natalya vs. Charlotte Flair Will Reignite WWE SmackDown Women's Division

Ryan DilbertSep 20, 2017

The stagnant WWE SmackDown Live women's division is about to get a jolt of electricity in the form of Natalya vs. Charlotte Flair.

The Queen of Harts versus The Queen is a meeting of two old rivals, two high-level performers and two stars of the ongoing women's revolution. SmackDown has meandered when it comes to its women of late, but Natalya vs. Flair will help bring things into focus, making the division a more engaging part of the blue brand again.

During the summer, WWE offered Naomi vs. Lana, a stopgap feud.

Lana was only at the beginning of her transition from manager to wrestler. She simply wasn't ready to be taking on the SmackDown women's champ on a pay-per-view. She was a rookie asked to play starter minutes.

Ahead of Battleground in July, WWE didn't have a women's feud to dive into. So it booked a Fatal 5-Way match at the PPV to decide Naomi's next contender.

A short Naomi vs. Natalya rivalry saw the latter seize the title at SummerSlam but create minimal sparks in the process.

Natalya will enter Hell in a Cell as SmackDown women's champ.

But now WWE has a ready-made story to tell. It has two puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly.

Flair has been out of the limelight lately, in part to be at father Ric Flair's side during his serious health issues. She returned on Tuesday night, however, strutting into the arena and soon after won a Fatal 4-Way to earn the right to challenge Natalya at the Hell in a Cell PPV.

Having The Queen back in the title picture will be an instant upgrade. Lana never belonged there. And WWE never found a way to fully tap into Natalya vs. Naomi.

Natalya and Flair's history will power this feud.

The two have been fighting for a long time. They clashed in 2016 and crossed paths at NXT, where Flair beat Natalya for the brand's vacant women's championship.

Animosity will be easy to create for that reason.

And as former Wrestle Zone writer Mike Killam reminded us, Flair and Natalya have great chemistry:

The dynamic of their rivalry will be different this time around too. Flair is the babyface, and Natalya is the heel, reversing their roles from 2016. Ric Flair won't be in the challenger's corner, either.

Flair went from being a dominant force to having a shaky record over the past several months, going from the Raw titleholder to winning only five matches between February to August, per CageMatch.net.

This feud is her chance for redemption, for her to reclaim her throne. The second-generation star is on the championship chase again.

And that promises to be a story that thrills as it unfolds.
