WWE No Mercy 2017: Predicting the Biggest Surprises and Most Shocking Moments

Kevin BergeSep 20, 2017

WWE has spent 2017 surprising fans left and right with frequent title changes and unexpected results that no one could have predicted for better or worse. SummerSlam 2017 was loaded with such moments with a card that seemed more content to simply change everything rather than stick to the expected narrative.

WWE No Mercy 2017 should be no different with the likelihood that multiple championships will change hands and wrestlers will fall quickly and decisively to those whom WWE plans to push higher up the ranks. Sunday's card is rife with opportunities for WWE to shock everyone with the results of the show.

Could Braun Strowman actually defeat Brock Lesnar and end his seemingly unstoppable reign? Will Alexa Bliss be able to keep her championship with Sasha Banks, Bayley, Nia Jax and Emma at her heels? Could John Cena vs. Roman Reigns be a match that shocks the world by changing one man's character for a long time?

These are the most likely surprising moment that could come from No Mercy based on how the show seems to be built up and focusing on events that would shock fans but not be completely unreasonable.

Enzo Amore Loses to Neville in Seconds

1 of 5

These last two weeks on Monday Night Raw have emphasized more than ever how much Enzo Amore is disliked backstage. Despite being one of the most popular wrestlers in the company, he has been repeatedly buried and now demoted to 205 Live, a cruiserweight-only program that has been so widely ignored that no one has noticed it has become a solid weekly wrestling show.

Enzo has been built up as being lesser to his peers, with each of his victories a shock that comes only after underhanded tactics. He is an underdog whom WWE has tried to turn the audience against, and it may just be working with each of his promos feeling more and more repetitive as of late before he gets destroyed by another heavyweight.

However, his standing in the cruiserweight division seems far more stable. He is 205 Live's most charismatic face and could add necessary excitement to the show. Even so, he is going up against the indomitable Neville, the King of the Cruiserweights whose only interaction with Enzo has been to laugh at his failures and fluky victories.

Most underdogs who have been sold to have no chance of winning end up putting on a strong showing on the biggest stage even if they lose. The same should happen for Enzo, but it is possible WWE continues to bury him by having lose quickly and decisively to Neville. That way, he can be thrown down the ladder in the division, with Cedric Alexander quickly taking his spot as Neville's next challenger.

With No Help, Jason Jordan Defeats The Miz to Capture the IC Championship

2 of 5

Jason Jordan's war with The Miz has been a slow build, with Jordan attempting to prove his worth against everyone in his path and showing himself to be more than just Kurt Angle's son. WWE clearly wants to invest in Jordan as a star, and it would not be a complete surprise if he captured the Intercontinental Championship even with as good as The Miz has been lately.

However, it would be more surprising if no one came to Jordan's aid in an uneven fight. With The Hardy Boyz already having a beef with The Miztourage, they could stand in Jordan's court to make sure he gets a fair fight against Miz. How could Jordan possibly win if no one helps him out?

This past month has been all about building up Jordan with competitive losses against Finn Balor, John Cena and Roman Reigns. His fire and drive have proved his worth, but he needs an impressive victory now. It would certainly make a huge statement if he not only defeated Miz but did so despite the odds with no one there to watch his back.

WWE has too much invested in Jordan to give a half-hearted effort in making him a star. They will make this his crowning moment and allow him to wipe out everyone in his path, with this match also potentially surprising everyone by being one of the best matches of the night.

Asuka Debuts Early After Alexa Bliss Survives the Fatal 5-Way Match

3 of 5

While it has already been made clear that Asuka is on her way to Monday Night Raw, an appearance at No Mercy may seem unlikely. The collarbone injury she suffered at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III was said to sideline her for six weeks at the least. No Mercy will only be the fifth week since Asuka was injured.

However, No Mercy would be the perfect time for her to make a sudden impact and not require her to do much to make her presence felt. The Fatal 5-Way women's match should be an excellent clash that leads to several moments for all five women. If Alexa Bliss escapes with her championship against all her rivals, she would have proved her worth against the entire current field of women.

That leaves only one true top challenge: Asuka.

There will not be a more perfect opportunity for Asuka to arrive and instantly stake her claim for the Raw Women's Championship. She would not even have to get physical. Her mere presence alone would strike fear in Bliss, making clear Bliss will be the next one to have to fight the woman who has not lost in WWE.

Another surprising move here would be to switch the title again, but Bayley, Bliss and Banks have been trading the championship too much lately to make another end of a championship reign matter. Asuka's debut and quick rise to the top will help the division much more than just throwing up the title once more.

John Cena Cheats to Defeat Roman Reigns

4 of 5

There is something off in this war between John Cena and Roman Reigns that cannot simply be taken as real-life heat between the wrestlers. Each week, Cena has run down Reigns as if his very presence in WWE is a travesty by using promos that are doing supposed future-top-guy Reigns little favors. Why is WWE so intensely focused on selling Cena's malice?

One answer may be that WWE is finally willing to push the boundaries with Cena's portrayal. How much does Cena need to defeat Reigns and prove the wrestler's lack of ability? Perhaps he is willing to take shortcuts to steal a victory, particularly given this match is meant to be Reigns' answer to Cena's verbal barrage by throwing Cena off his game quickly.

Cena has not cheated to find victory in a long time as cheating is often the trademark of a WWE heel. This would not need to be a full-blown heel turn but rather add more complexity to Cena's character, with Cena admitting many times that he is not simply a face anymore. The Face That Runs The Place has challenged the young blood to step up to him, questioning whether any of them are worth his time and respect.

Cena cheating to defeat Reigns would put over Reigns while extending the feud. Cena would be forced to admit he cheated or be driven further down a dark path by this feud. Either way, this result would be a complete change for Cena and give this feud a stronger story to set up a second clash that is even more heated than before.

Brock Lesnar Wins but Is Bloodied and Must Be Stretchered Out

5 of 5

Braun Strowman has been the biggest star of 2017 with incredible performances week in and week out, which is why it would be a shame if he simply fell to Brock Lesnar in their first clash. The Monster Among Men has been sold as an indomitable force who has Lesnar's number and will make The Beast Incarnate work for every inch in their war.

While WWE often has avoided violent imagery in the past decade, they have seemed to grow more comfortable lately with the portrayal of blood, particularly with both Lesnar and Strowman. Lesnar often seems to get busted open in his matches, and Strowman's war with Reigns was constantly a bloodbath for both men. It would only make sense for the two behemoths to get even more violent with each other.

It is likely Lesnar will walk out of No Mercy as Universal Champion with the Beast an important attraction for the company. However, it would be a good shock to see Lesnar survive but just barely, keeping the championship but putting over Strowman by being unable to walk out of his own power.

It has frequently been stated that Lesnar is not booked for dates past No Mercy. While it would be easy for him to simply disappear as usual, it would be much more memorable if Strowman put him on the shelf. Lesnar being stretchered out of No Mercy, bloodied and clutching his title with Strowman standing angrily above him, would be the ideal powerful image for this match and be a violent shock of a result.
