Jon 'Bones' Jones Fails UFC Drug Test: Is Move to WWE Coming Next?

Ryan DilbertAug 23, 2017

Although he emerged from UFC 214 with the light heavyweight championship in hand, Jon "Bones" Jones may have to soon re-evaluate his career options. His best bet may be to go the scripted-fighting route and sign with WWE.

His comeback story has quickly turned into a cautionary tale. Weeks after knocking out Daniel Cormier to become champ once more, Jones finds himself potentially at the end of his UFC career.

TMZ reported Jones tested positive for the steroid Turinabol in the lead-up to the Cormier fight. The report also noted: "He could be banned for up to four years."

Fellow UFC light heavyweight fighter Volkan Oezdemir commented on the situation:

Controversy has been as commonplace as success for Jones. He was arrested for a hit-and-run. He tested positive for banned substances in 2016. And now he may have added a third offense to his resume.

His UFC career is in clear danger of being over.

The superfight against WWE universal champ Brock Lesnar he demanded after beating Cormier is out of the question. As Bleacher Report MMA writer Jeremy Botter pointed out, there's only one place Lesnar vs. Jones could happen now:

WWE welcomed Lesnar back with open arms after his own UFC failed drug tests, but The Beast Incarnate was already a WWE star at that point, already established in that world. Still, it's a sign the company may be willing to take on Jones, baggage and all.

Even as far back as Muhammad Ali mixing it up with Gorilla Monsoon in the '70s, WWE has sought mainstream buzz. Jones would bring that. The headlines he would generate and the eyes he'd add to the product would likely outweigh the controversy surrounding him.

With his star power at the level it is, the 30-year-old Jones isn't going to start from the ground up in this new world. He's not going to endure the grueling WWE schedule and become one of its workhorses. Not when he can come in for a few cameos and one fight in exchange for a fat check.

Even as gifted as he is as a fighter, he'd be limited in what he could do for WWE without extensive training.

That won't matter. Floyd Mayweather made his mark on WWE by essentially transferring his boxing game to WrestleMania. And outsiders from Mr. T to Stephen Amell have wrestled matches for WWE.

Should Jones go that path, he'd likely be asked to essentially modify his MMA work, to slug it out with Lesnar and let the veteran of the squared circle do much of the work.

To WWE, Jones' value comes from his name power and the legitimacy he would bring to the bout.

And Jones would have little issue handling the promo side of the WWE game. He's always been a strong talker and is a charismatic man with a big presence.

Those skills are paramount in pro wrestling. And he may have no other place to use them.

It's surely not how he envisioned himself finishing out his career, but Jones seems to have derailed his own UFC journey, and WWE beckons.
