That enemy is Conor McGregor, cultural force and icon in two sports at the moment, who will fight Mayweather on August 26 and who has fought Diaz in two of his last three MMA contests (and probably will again in the not-too-distant future).
Back when all of this Mayweather-McGregor stuff was just talk, Mayweather got some attention by releasing a video of him calling Diaz up to discuss the Irishman and the pair of legendary bouts Diaz had with him.
As he often does, Diaz voiced a feeling that he'd won the second bout—which he lost via majority decision—after he shocked the world by stopping McGregor a few months prior via choke. For his part, Mayweather agreed.
The whole thing was pretty surreal, a clip of the highest-paid athlete in sports going out of his way to get in touch with the UFC's newest star. It was even more surreal considering Diaz had been plying his trade for years and getting almost no mainstream attention, then more or less out of the blue he had calls like this one coming in.
The love-in has continued, too, as it has been speculated that Mayweather would like Diaz to join him for his ring walk in the McGregor bout. Diaz, for his part, seems keen to get in on the action, per The Roman Show (h/t Bloody Elbow).
Time will tell whether or not McGregor has two nemeses to deal with come fight night, but when Diaz is involved you know it's going to entertain no matter what.
